Acromegaly is the disorder caused due to the excessive production of growth hormone in the pituitary gland. The persons affected by this acromegaly will have widened nose, bulging forehead, lips become thick, hands enlarges and gap develops between the teeth. The other routine problems include headache, arthritis, hyper tension, heart failure, kidney failure. The main reason for this acromegaly is the pituitary adenoma, which is nothing but the light tumor in the pituitary gland. This leads to the excessive production of growth hormone. This not only causes acromegaly, but also other complications like abnormal menstrual cycle and breast discharge in women and impotency in men. The other reasons for acromegaly include other tumors and human growth hormone abuse. Acromegaly can be diagnosed by the frequent sampling of blood with serum GH measurement. The pituitary adenoma can be avoided by surgery, radiotherapy, stomatostatin analogues and dopamine agonist. The growth hormone production can be reduced by GH-receptor antagonist.
